About

Hizbawi Meresa

MBA Candidate. Former General Manager. Mechanical Engineer turned business strategist.

My Background

I am currently pursuing my MBA at Washington University in St. Louis Olin Business School, where I have been recognized as a Dean's Scholar — an acknowledgment of academic performance and professional potential. My academic focus is on strategy, finance, and operations, with a particular interest in how these disciplines intersect in practice.

Before the MBA, I co-founded and served as General Manager of a detergent manufacturing company in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. In that role, I was responsible for the full operating reality of the business: procurement strategy, production throughput, cost management, commercial relationships, and financial reporting. Managing a manufacturing operation in an emerging market — with its supply chain volatility, infrastructure constraints, and working capital pressures — was a graduate education in applied business before the formal one.

My undergraduate degree is in Mechanical Engineering, which gave me a foundational orientation toward systems thinking, constraint identification, and quantitative rigor. I find that this engineering background shapes how I approach business problems: with precision about cause and effect, and with respect for how systems behave under real-world conditions rather than idealized assumptions.

Through the MBA program, I am building expertise in financial valuation, strategy consulting methodology, and AI-enabled business analysis — and layering these onto the operational and commercial experience I developed as a founder and operator.

What I Am Building

I am building an integrated capability at the intersection of analytical rigor, operating experience, and strategic communication. My goal is to contribute to organizations working on complex business problems — in consulting, corporate strategy, investment analysis, or operations leadership — where the ability to think clearly, communicate precisely, and act decisively creates measurable value.

Financial Valuation

DCF, comparable company analysis, precedent transactions, and investment thesis development.

Strategy Consulting

Market entry, competitive analysis, commercial strategy, and strategic recommendation framing.

Operations

Operating model design, cost optimization, supply chain analysis, and throughput improvement.

AI-enabled Analysis

Using AI tools to accelerate research synthesis, scenario modeling, and pattern recognition.

Emerging Risk

Identifying and structuring early-stage risk signals for strategic and insurance applications.

Entrepreneurship

First-hand experience founding and operating a manufacturing business in an emerging market.

How I Think About Business Problems

Structured Problem Solving

I use hypothesis-driven, issue-tree logic to break down complex problems into manageable components before developing a recommendation.

Operating Reality

I ground strategic and financial analysis in an understanding of how businesses actually function — not just how they look on paper.

Analytical Communication

I believe a good analysis is only valuable if it can be communicated clearly. I work to develop concise, structured outputs that translate insight into action.

Strategic Judgment

Beyond the framework, I try to develop genuine judgment about what matters in a given business situation — the judgment that cannot be templated.
